The ONE PERCENT COALITION is committed to the achievable goal of helping at least one percent (94,000) of severely disabled people find competitive employment. Individuals with a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more functional capabilities with respect to work are extremely disadvantaged in the world of competitive employment. With this understanding, we believe that government, business and the disability community can work together to achieve the modest, yet realistic, goal of improving their employment rate by at least one percent.

There are approximately 9.4 million people with severe disabilities, with an unemployment rate of approximately seventy-four percent. If just 94,000 of the people now receiving federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments and related health benefits were, instead, to become gainfully and competitively employed, the projected ten-year cost savings to the federal treasury would be more than $45 billion dollars.

ONE PERCENT is based on the belief that the federal government should create new incentives for the private sector to employ many more people with severe disabilities.
